I am very interested in hearing from poodle owners about teeth cleaning products. Does anyone recommend a particular product or ingredient? Has anyone used Proden "PlaqueOff" , Petzlife, or biotene gel? Appreciate any insight. Sue

I use Denta Clean and a Nutri Vet pet toothbrush for my poodles. One of them doesn't mind the paste, the other completely hates it. But, I can successfully get both sets of teeth cleaned. They also get periodic visits to the vet for a good in depth cleaning. I have found that doing the cleaning where there is a water sprayer that you can insert in their mouths directly after cleaning is better, it seems to wash their mouths cleaner and have them gagging less.

Hi Sue,
It works thru the dog's blood system from what information I've gotten on PlaqueOff. Yes, it did remove the plaque from her teeth. Here is an explanation on the arsenic contained in PlaqueOff.
*About Arsenic (information supplied by ProDen's creator, Dr. Sune Wikner):
It is important to understand that arsenic exists everywhere in nature. There are two forms of arsenic: inorganic and organic. The former may be toxic; the latter is not. In the US the upper safe consumption limit is 2 µg arsenic per kg body weight per day. In Europe the figure is 15. Note that those figures relate to inorganic arsenic. Several studies report that the algae that used in ProDen PlaqueOff contains exclusively organic arsenic (7 µg per scoop).
Moreover, ProDen contains alginates which are poorly absorbed from the intestine into the bloodstream. Instead they are excreted via feces. The alginates found in PlaqueOff have another well known property. They bind heavy metals like Strontium, Arsenic, Lead and Cadmium. Then the heavy metals leave the body via feces with the alginates and do not enter the blood. In fact, people living near nuclear plants in the US are recommended to eat algae if there is a risk for strontium leaking from the plant.
Therefore, there is no risk for arsenic poisoning for pets taking ProDen PlaqueOff
I hope that helps you with the arsenic info in PlaqueOff.
Thanks for the input on Proden PlaqueOff. How do you and/or your vet think this stuff works? I read a study done on Beagles in which they administered it down their throats to determine if it was working and if it was indeed working systemically as the manufacturer claims (as opposed to working directly on the teeth by coming in contact with them). They got good results. I am a bit concerned that it works systemically by causing the saliva to contain high iodine or arsenic. According to the description on www.onynaturalpet.com, there is naturally occuring arsenic in the seaweed and to my eye it seems kind of high. I did, however, make the assumption that this stuff was safe, and started using it about four weeks ago. I would specifically like to know if your dog had brown plaque on her teeth prior to you using this product-- is it your experience that this product removed plaque from her teeth? Some dogs have naturally white, clean teeth. Thanks very much, Sue

Hi Sue,
Yes, I use Proden PlaqueOff for my toy poodle for about 2 years now. It does a wonderful job of keeping her teeth clean & very white. I like the fact how easy it is to use, just a half a scoop a day into her food. Using gels or sprays most dogs don't like them anyways. My vet now uses & sells it in her veterniary office since seeing my dog's teeth. Hope that helps you some.
